The first composition depicts several chickens gathered outdoors near a barn under the soft light of dusk or dawn. The second painting shows a cozy, interior scene where chickens are gathered in a barn near a window, bathed in warm light. Van Leemputten’s mastery of light gives a serene atmosphere to these scenes, highlighting his focus on detailed rural life.
Cornelius van Leemputten (1841–1902) was a Belgian painter celebrated for his animal paintings, particularly those depicting rural life and farmyard scenes. His works often feature livestock in idyllic settings, capturing the essence of pastoral tranquility; he became known for his scenes of farmyard animals, and especially for his landscapes with grazing sheep reflecting the influence of the French artist Charles Jacque (1813-1894). During his lifetime, van Leemputten regularly participated in international exhibitions and won several gold medals. His first was in Ghent in 1883, followed by others in Edinburgh in 1886, Port Adelaide in 1887, and finally Berlin in 1896. He was awarded the "Chevalier de l’ordre de Leopold" (Knight of the Order of Leopold) in 1895. A member of the Realism movement, his style was marked by meticulous attention to detail and warm, naturalistic tones. Listed in the Benezit (see last picture).
