Pair of Circular Vases in ivory and gilded lacquered wood with curved handles in wrought and gilded iron, resting on a high square base lacquered in ivory which supports the turned vase carved with ribs and ribs.
These are palm vases from the neoclassical period, from the end of the 18th century, Italian liturgical altar furnishings, for the centre, with the rear part decorated.
The finish is played on the alternation between ivory lacquering and gold gilding to gouache on a red bole preparation. On the top a large circular hollow was probably used to house the sheet metal flower vase. The two iron handles have scrolls in the upper part and delicious curls in the lower part. The state of conservation is good compatibly with the dating which dates back to the end of the 1700s. They come from Northern Italy.
Palm holders are flower vases that were placed on altars as decorations; often of reduced shape in depth and not decorated in the rear part because they were placed against the walls in the side altars. Differently for the main altars where they were made in the round. Various materials were used, mainly wood or copper or brass sheets variously embossed or turned into sheets, but also cast bronze. The palm trees, symbol of the victory of Christianity, give way to fake flowers made of various materials such as fabric, sheet metal, beads. They are excellent as decorations to be inserted into any furnishing and particularly as lamp bases.
The general state of conservation is good, with signs of wear, defects and restorations compatible with the late 1700s dating. They come from a private collection.
They can become two splendid bases for antique neoclassical lamps. less
