The wood has a rich brown patina that has been accentuated by French wax, allowing the nuances of the carvings to come out. Above and below the lion (which has been carved in an excavated area in the center of the rectangular plaque) are phrases in Latin that commemorate fallen members of the Swiss Guard. Helvetiorum fidei ac virtutis translates to “Faith and virtue of the Swiss”, while Die X August I II et III Septimbris MDCCXCII represents the dates of French Revolution attacks where the Swiss Guards perished while protecting Louis XVI, King of France. The noble lion, which has been impaled through the torso, lies on two shields, one emblazoned with fleur de lys representing the French monarchy and one with the coat of arms of Switzerland. It is an amazing depiction of the original stone monument that has been carved into rock in Lucerne, Switzerland.
