He trained under the ukiyo-e master … more Tsuchiya Koitsu 土屋光逸 (1870-1949) was a Japanese print artist of the Shin Hanga movement. He trained under the ukiyo-e master Kobayashi Kiyochika, and in the 1930’s began designing woodblock prints for the Shozaburo Watanabe publishing house. A contemporary of Hiroshi Yoshida and Kawase Hasui, Koitsu is known for his landscapes and images of traditional Japanese architecture.

The explorations of color and light in this composition make this one of Koitsu's most recognized designs. The characters on the brightly lit lantern read "Doi," the name of the publisher who first produced this print in 1939. Among Koitsu’s oeuvre of landscapes, his images of rain and night scenes are especially popular and well-collected.

This impression is in excellent condition. It is unsealed and therefore most likely from a post-war edition published by Doi Hangaten the 1950's -1960s. This design can be found in the collection of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA).
