L. & J.G. Stickley, founded in 1902 by brothers Leopold and John George Stickley in Fayetteville, New York, is renowned for its high-quality, handcrafted furniture rooted in the Arts and Crafts movement, also known as Mission style in the United States. This design era, which emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was a response to industrialization, emphasizing craftsmanship, natural materials, and simplicity. The Stickley brothers’ furniture is characterized by clean, straight lines, solid wood construction (often oak), exposed joinery, and a focus on function over ornamentation. Although the brothers’ partnership ended in 1919, Leopold continued the business under the name L. & J.G. Stickley, which remains in operation today and is celebrated for its enduring contributions to American Arts and Crafts design.
