This marvelously eye-catching celadon-hued (glaze over clay) earthenware floor vase was meticulously covered in a handwoven seagrass twine by an unknown Vietnamese ceramics artisan sometime in the 1970s to early 1980s. The tradition of weaving with seagrass (aka sedge grass) has a long history in Vietnam. Places like Phu Tan village in Tuy An district and Kim Son village in the province of Ninh Binh are well known for their record of seagrass (sedge) weaving and cultivation. Vietnamese ceramics dates back thousands of years. Archaeological evidence suggests that this art form existed even before the era of Chinese domination in Vietnam. Although Chinese ceramics had a significant influence on Vietnamese pottery and ceramics during the post-Chinese domination era, it has evolved over time to have a distinct Vietnamese style. Photos were taken in the round to show all sides and any varying shades and nuances of color and weave. This beauty measures 25½” x 12” x 9” H/W/D; 1” diameter mouth opening; weight 12 lbs. Handcrafted from “black” clay, indigenous to Vietnam and a celadon-hued overglaze wrapped in handwoven seagrass twine and weavers. Though the label is long gone, it was handcrafted in Vietnam. In excellent condition with minimal age-appropriate wear. FYI, I’ve always weighted this beauty down with sand so that it does not easily topple over and would suggest doing the same. A fabulous eye-catching design accent that will complement most any design style and add an earthy elegant touch wherever placed!
