An Attractive Early 18th Century George II Period Walnut Tea Caddy Of Rectangular Form, Having Crossbanded And Inlaid Decoration To Top Enclosing Three Divisions, with Original Brasswear And Raised On Elegant Original Shaped Bracket Plinth.
A lovely little mid 18th century tea caddy which boasts real charm and sophistication in its construction. A little earlier in date than most that you will see it was certainly well thought out with the inlaid and banded decoration adding a real decorative touch in combination with the well figured walnut veneers. It is also nice that it retains its original brasswear of course and comes with fully working lock and key. The shaped plinth is a really unusual feature and adds another level of elegance and decorative feel to the tea caddy.
Tea was an extremely precious commodity throughout the 18th and 19th centuries and the purpose of a tea caddy was not just to preserve the and extend the life of the precious tea leaves, but also to enable the owner to lock away those aforementioned valuable tea leaves, keeping them safe from the house staffs potential wandering hands.
This tea caddy comes with a fully functioning lock and key, plus has been cleaned and traditionally waxed polished by our highly skilled and well trained specialist antique furniture restorers in our workshops before being offered for sale.
It also remains in good condition and has clearly been well loved throughout the years of its life.
