This is a very substantial and heavy vintage bookcase or china cabinet by the highly-touted furniture maker, Union National, with beveled glass doors, brass pulls and beautifully hand-painted Chinoiserie decorations. While it was in business, Union National made fewer than 20 of these breakfronts a year and each featured hand-painted artwork depicting birds, foliage and landscapes signed by the artist. This cabinet was painted and signed by “Retha.”
