This is a rare and remarkable find—two academic drawings of the same model from a singular sitting session, dating back to 1917. The notes in the top right corner, along with the official stamp from the École des Beaux-Arts in Bordeaux, France, add a layer of authenticity and historical significance to these works. These drawings are exceptional examples of Realism, showcasing the meticulous skill and attention to detail that were hallmarks of academic training at the time.
The tragic and contemplative expression on the model's face is exquisitely rendered, capturing the emotional depth characteristic of Realism. The swim trunks, a distinctive feature, offer a glimpse into the fashion culture of the early 20th century, grounding the figure in its historical context.
These pieces exemplify Classicism and Realism at their finest, reflecting the rigorous training provided by prestigious institutions like the Academy of Paris. Academic drawings such as these were integral to the coursework designed for mastering the human figure. Charles Bargue's seminal text, The Art of Figure Drawing (b. 1826), served as a foundational guide for artists, helping them develop a deep understanding of the figure through carefully tailored charcoal, pencil, and other drawing mediums. Bargue's influence was particularly strong during the Post-Impressionism years and continued to shape artistic training well into the early 1900s.
As with any antique artwork, these beautiful studies bear the marks of their age, as detailed in the accompanying photos. These signs of wear, however, only enhance their story, serving as living proof of the enduring tradition of academic figural art in the early 1900s.
