This exquisite vintage portrait of a woman with a striped shawl is attributed to the French artist Yves Becmeur (1909-1921). Becmeur was a prominent figure in the arts and art education scene during the mid to late 20th century, known not only for his artwork but also for his contributions as an academic and author for the esteemed l'Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His most significant collaboration was in the publication of the influential art text Introduction to Visual Arts in 1967, an authoritative textbook that shaped the education of future artists in mid-century France.
This piece is signed by the artist on the top right corner. Of note is the inscription "At. Dupas" appears in the top left-hand corner, a subject referenced in other known paintings by Becmeur. The portrait itself, with its vibrant hues and the subject's melancholy expression, captures the emotional depth and stylistic nuances reminiscent of early Post-Impressionist paintings. This artwork is a testament to Becmeur's mastery in painting the human figure, embodying both the vibrancy and introspective qualities that define his oeuvre.
