Leave it to the French to design a functional yet etheric device for trapping insects that disturb orchard fruits!
Dipping the top in honey or other sweet come-on and placing back in the bottle will lure bugs into the hole in the bottom of the jar; unable to escape, they fall into the groove surrounding the bottom opening.
I would forego the grimmer aspect and hang it as a perennial sculpture outdoors or in, where it would catch the light and reflect sun and leaves. It is a thing of great beauty.
Exceptionally long for it's ilk: 16.5 inches long, 5" diameter, 3" openings. The stopper is 3.5 x
2.5. Late 19th century, and in perfect condition. A heavy wire provides loop for hanging. less
