A Very Charming Mid 17th Century, Charles II Period, Oak Joint Stool Of Pegged Construction, Plus Untouched Colour & Patina Throughout, Having Rectangular Moulded Top Over Turned Upright Supports with Original Straight Stretchers.
Sometimes referred to as coffin stools (although this was much more of a 19th century trend for their usage as opposed to their original purpose in earlier times) the humble antique joint stool was by far the most common form of seating in 16th and 17th century England. Indeed they were made in relatively vast quantities and almost every house would have a selection of them on hand in a variety of difference sizes and heights so that they could be used as required.
This antique oak joint stool is a nice example, retaining excellent colour and surface and has very little restoration to speak of. Naturally due to their age and fucntion it is common to find significant restoration on many of these items.
In the modern home they still serve the same variety of purposes as they were originally made for, allowing one to use them in many different seating situations, or even as a simple occasional or side table.
There are no structural defects or areas of significant historical damage to speak of, just the expected old marks which have blended into the surface which one would expect to find on an item which is well over 350 years old.
As with all items which we offer for sale it has been inspected in our workshops and attended to by our highly skilled, trained antique furniture restorers, receiving a natural wax polish before being placed on sale to ensure it is in its best possible condition and ready for immediate placement following purchase.
