Edouard-Emmanuel-Charles Pannetier, Provençal painter and Orientalist, was born on November 6, 1884 in Clermont-Ferrand (Auvergne). Fatherless, former English teacher, he began his artistic studies at the School of Fine Arts in his hometown and then at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. Trained as a drawing teacher, he worked for a few years in Algeria at the Lamoricière high school in Oran between 1910 and 1920. Back in France, he worked as a drawing teacher at the Aix-en-Provence high school around 1930. He painted numerous landscapes and genre scenes from Algeria and Provence. For the rest, he illustrated several literary works, highlighting the novel “Atala” by Chateaubriand in its 1946 edition. He died in Rueil-Malmaison, near Paris, on October 14, 1965, at the age of 80 year.

Provencal art refers to the rich artistic traditions emerging from the Provence region of France. Nestled in the heart of this region, Aix-en-Provence exudes a unique blend of historical charm and vibrant artistic culture. The city is renowned for its stunning architecture, picturesque landscapes, and deep-rooted connection to the arts, making it a focal point for those seeking to immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Provence.
Aix-en-Provence has a long-standing tradition of fostering artistic talent. The city is the birthplace of the famous post-impressionist painter, Paul Cézanne, who is often regarded as the father of modern art. His influence is palpable throughout the city, with numerous sites dedicated to his life and work. One cannot talk about Provencal art without mentioning Cézanne, whose unique approach to color and form has inspired countless artists.
However, the city’s artistic heritage extends far beyond Cézanne. Aix-en-Provence has been a hub for artists for centuries, attracting painters, sculptors, and writers who have been drawn to its stunning light and idyllic landscapes. The city’s numerous galleries, museums, and art schools make it a thriving center for contemporary art, ensuring that the artistic spirit of Aix-en-Provence continues to flourish.
