A beautifully vibrant and textural porcelain panel depicting the famous Sannenzaka street of Kyoto by celebrated artist Myōhō (Matsuzaki Mitsuo), Original gilt frame with velvet matte included. Very good condition.
Matsuzaki Mitsuo, born in 1937 in Sapporo, Hokkaido, began his artistic journey as an illustrator but shifted his focus to ceramics in 1963, studying blue and white porcelain painting at Takeho Kiln in Seto, Aichi Prefecture. He then pursued a career as a ceramic artist at Hirayama Kiln in Toki, Gifu Prefecture. In 1967, Matsuzaki moved to Kano-Matsutani Kiln in Gojō, Kyoto, where he mastered the techniques of wheel-throwing.
His passion for ceramics led him to travel solo to Europe in 1974, where he explored Western ceramics in countries such as France, Spain, and Turkey. It was during this journey that he acquired the icchin-style raised-slip decoration technique, which became a fundamental element of his work. After another trip to Europe in 1980, Matsuzaki returned from Delft, Netherlands, and began creating his signature ceramic tile art using Kōchi glaze, using unique techniques that he continues to refine until today.
