This piece is an exquisite and unique work of art. High relief sculptures have the extraordinary ability to convey depth and dynamism, allowing complex scenes such as this baptism of Christ to be presented with an immersive, almost three-dimensional quality. The use of meerschaum, a mineral native to the Black Sea region, adds a distinctive element, not only because of its rarity, but also because of its potential aesthetic qualities.
The scene is elaborate with many characters participating in the main scene taking place in the center foreground, the baptism of Christ.
The work is unsigned, however, the craftsmanship and attention to detail suggest it was sculpted by expert hands.
The choice of a black lacquered wooden frame to accompany the sculpture is strategic. It provides a sharp contrast that enhances the visibility and impact of the meerschaum material, drawing viewers' eyes directly to the intricacies of the work.
