Ostentatious furniture associated with the reign of Louis XIV was no longer favored, leading French artisans to create visually lighter designs with a focus on comfort. A wonderful example of the Régence style is this wrought iron and rouge marble top console from the mid-1900s, which features an airy, pierced base adorned with a restrained amount of tole leaves.

Four golden leaves embellish both of the graceful S-scroll shaped legs (which are formed by a pair of surmounting C-scrolls facing in opposite directions), with two large leaves near the top, and smaller versions affixed just above each of the gilt roundel feet. There is one final tole décor, that of a well-crafted leaf cup noix with a wavy pricket “stem” that hangs down from a circular arrangement of adjoining C-scrolls. The free-flowing base is topped by a shaped, ¾ inch thick rouge marble top with gray and white veining that has a recessed quarter-round molding.
