We fell in love with these at first glance! From our extensive travels sourcing antiques in France - we have regularly encountered these genuine, hard-working French country folk of the "Greatest Generation" who are the backbone of their nation. By sharing some of our memories, perhaps it will explain our being besot with these wonderful folk art sculptures.
Long before airbnbs, we had the good fortune to rent "gites" on visits to the far corners of France. Apartments were created in outbuildings on farms and vineyards to generate much-needed income to keep these properties in the family. These home stays gave us the privilege of meeting fine people such as: Mme. Arrue and her husband, Joseph, who fought to in the Resistance; the elderly Malbec farmer & his wife who insisted on sharing their homemade peach wine while our children burned off excess energy; or the equestrian farm owner who encouraged our young sons to climb his cherry trees and eat as much of the fruit as they liked.
The pieces are unsigned, but you can see the love and devotion that guided the artist's hands in creating these works of art.
