With that said the wood is in overall good shape and the variegated woodgrains still remain mesmerizing in natural light. The rattan does show a few broken strands (which can be seen clearly in the detail photos provided) however the backrest remains supportive and weight-bearing. Introducing a splendid Mid-Century Modern rocker designed by the incomparable Arthur Umanoff for Washington Woodcraft in the 1960s. Crafted from solid American black walnut and featuring a backrest of hand-woven rattan and sporting the perfect amount of patina familiar with something once loved and utilized this rocker is the perfect blend of minimalism and style.
Arthur Umanoff (1923–1985) was an American-born industrial designer, noted for his contribution to the American midcentury modern movement. Upon graduating from New York’s prestigious Pratt Institute and the American School of Design in the beginning of the 1950s, Umanoff began collaborating with Post Modern Ltd, a New York design company that produced and sold modernist wrought iron and wood designs.
Throughout the 1960s, he worked closely with the furniture manufacturer Shaver Howard, who put many of his furniture designs into production. He also designed clocks for Howard Miller. Arthur Umanoff believed that design should not only be beautifully constructed and functional, but that it should also be attainable. Using natural materials and new methods to reimagine traditional furniture pieces, he created versatile designs for the home that were celebrated for their quality as well as for their simplified, functional forms and staying power. Reflecting warmth and practicality, his designs were often imagined in wrought iron, rattan, walnut and birch, imbued with functional details yet retaining a sense of natural elegance thanks to their slender, tapered lines.
With it's character-rich patina, timeless minimalist design and iconic Umanoff blending of walnut and ratan this vintage rocker is perfect for collectors and designers alike. Able to blend against a myriad of design backdrops from Mid-Century Modern to Post Modern to Contemporary and everything in between this petite rocker is at home in a rustic cabin as it is the perfect accent piece in almost any home. Make it yours today.
