A fine antique Georgian Regency period tall case 8 day inlaid mahogany grandfather clock, by Joseph Thompson of Whitehaven, circa 1820.
The clock is made of figured flame mahogany and inlaid with ebony and satinwood stringing, the clock hood with twin arched 'swan's neck' pediment with brass roundels and a central brass ball finial. The hood door is flanked by a pair of turned columns enclosing a painted dial, with a moon phase roller for night and day. The dial with black Roman numerals and having a seconds dial and also a calendar dial, the dial having gilded painted floral spandrels, the clock is signed to the center "Joseph Thompson, Whitehaven" (a prosperous Georgian coastal town & port in the Cumberland district of the north of England). The trunk of the case with ribbed pilasters and inlaid panels of satinwood stringing, the clock is raised on bracket feet.
The clock has an eight day mechanism and strikes the hours on a mellow sounding bell, the clock chime can be silenced by not winding the chime arbor, original pendulum and weights.
The clock has just been professionally cleaned and overhauled by a professional clocksmith and keeps good time, the case and clock are in very good condition. Bloomsbury will arrange for the clock to be set up in your home if needed.
