From Japan’s Showa period, this is an exceptionally beautiful polychrome Kagoshima-Black Satsuma condiment set, comprising of 10 porcelain bowls, including Japanese handmade wood box.
Entirely hand-enameled raised decoration. Over glaze Satsuma decoration. Cherry blossoms (sakura). Ume (plum) blossoms. Butterflies. Japanese maple-tree leaves. Hallmarked. Original, cypress wood artisan’s box is included.
Kagoshima Black Satsuma is made of special local clay. Since Kagoshima prefecture has an active volcano, the soil has volcanic ash containing a lot of iron. The outstanding feature of Black Satsuma is a special beauty made by glazing. Satsuma-yaki is a Japanese traditional craft from Kagoshima prefecture.
Each bowl measures 3 1/2 inches in diameter (9 cm). You will receive 10 bowls.
Mint condition. No cracks, chips, not crazed. This set is a Japanese specialty. It is an investment you will never regret. Authentic sets such as this one are quite rare to find in the U.S.
