Donald Sultan (born 1951) is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker from Asheville, North Carolina who has carved out a niche for himself with awe-inspiring large-scale still life paintings that are infused an unconventional twist. Sultan earned a BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. Dissatisfied with traditional painting methods, Sultan pushed boundaries by experiment with techniques that embraced industrial tools and materials such as tar, inspired by his father's tire business. His art, characterized by bold colors, well-defined shapes, and a mastery of physical density, has garnered global acclaim and are featured in the permanent collections of over 50 major museums including the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R.
