Donald Sultan (born 1951) is an American painter, sculptor, and printmaker from Asheville, North Carolina who has carved out a niche for himself with awe-inspiring large-scale still life paintings that are infused an unconventional twist. Sultan earned a BFA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and an MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. Dissatisfied with traditional painting methods, Sultan pushed boundaries by experiment with techniques that embraced industrial tools and materials such as tar, inspired by his father's tire business. His art, characterized by bold colors, well-defined shapes, and a mastery of physical density, has garnered global acclaim and are featured in the permanent collections of over 50 major museums including the New York Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), Los Angeles, the Reina Sofia in Madrid, the Tate Modern in London, the National Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and more. less
