A very rare pair of 1925-1935 French art deco wall sconces. Nickel plated solid brass or bronze mounts hold beautiful geometrical shades in opalescent molded-pressed semi-crystal. With beautiful tones of milky blue or warm amber depending whether light falls on or shines through them.
Simonet started in the 19th century as a company specialized in gilt bronze decorations for furniture candlesticks gas lamps, etc. During the first world war Cellier et Simonet were running their business as good as possible during wartime. In 1919 the company revived and the brothers Albert and Henry together with help of their mother re-opened the workshops and store of their father downtown Paris, 60 rue des Archives. The company finally closed its door in 1970. During the art deco era the sculptor and designer Henri Dieupart (1888-1980) created numerous vases as well as some lampshades and mounts, edited by Simonet frères. The glass vases and shades were produced by the Cristallerie Choisy-le-Roi. The rare art deco lamps by Simonet frères are nowadays sought after items that make high prices at auction houses. Similar to Genet & Michon, Lalique, Brandt, Ruhlmann.
At the back the mounts are signed Simonet frères. This wonderful model shade is never signed. It is extremely rare. I saw only a couple of them over the last 25 years. A Damiers (checkerboard) chandelier is represented in an article on Simonet frères in an old design magazine.
The sconces are 22 high (8,66 inches) 9,3 cm wide (3,66") and 13,8 cm deep (5,43"). They are in very good condition. I have re-nickeled the mounts and the fixtures come rewired. I placed American candelabra base sockets.
