Historically, the unusual stone was favored by scholar-artists and calligraphers as an ideal surface on which to place scrolls for painting. This stunning puddingstone specimen was formed in China’s Shandong province many thousands of years ago and has been shaped by hand into a smooth oval to reveal its distinctive markings. In the tradition of Chinese scholars' rocks, or gongshi, the polished stone has been elevated on a custom steel mount for display as a natural sculpture. See less
