The entire piece is carved from one piece of wood, Christ is almost carved completely in the round, never extending beyond the braided border. Signed "Jean" on the back. Newer hanging eye hook.
Jesus has very androgynous features with long hair and a tight fitting should wrapped around his torso. The burial shroud is angular and mimics the exaggerated shape of the tomb.
Most probably French or Swiss in origin. less
