Dynamic six individual signed suibokuga ink paintings on paper mounted onto a six panel wood frame screen of Chinese Sumi-e painting mounted as a Japanese screen.
The strong rhythm that runs through this landscape of mist, clouds, mountain peaks, forests, and boats gliding upon calm waters can be compared to a musical composition; themes are introduced and developed, abandoned and taken up again. It is a display of the ways in which overpowering natural phenomena sustain and challenge the human creative strengths. An amazing range of mountains, streams, groves and reclusive scholars inhabit a virtual space in the landscapes.
The intricate and meandering range of mountains spreads all the way in a fitful visual rhythm. It is a match only to the awe-inspiring breadth and scope of a natural scene.
Here and there are traveling scholars walking among the mountains or in boats off the shore. Early 20th century literati landscape in which a scholar and luggage bearer drawn with delicate precision walk toward a thatch roofed hut perched on the shores of a large lake, the scene hemmed in by clouds. Massive rock formations and gnarly pine scratched in dark ink pull the eye hither and thither across the painted surface, constantly drawing attention to new aspects and details.
The imaginary landscape is built of realistic components reassembled to capture essential qualities : unattainable, awe-inspiring height and distance, approachable rocks and trees promising refreshing tranquility. Concern with illusion of recession arises partly from the wish to separate these two spheres. Partly from the need to give visible form to the space in which the imagination is invited to soar.
Superb artistry and representations as well as calligraphy. Wonderfully detailed yet subtle and tranquil in effect. Poetic inscriptions since the Western ideal of a fixed vanishing point does not exist in Chinese landscaping painting, only the "far and near" effect created by subtle variations in he background and foreground, the spectator can take different journeys through the same scene.
Ink on paper with gold leaf surround, matted in silk brocade and mounted on a solid wood frame.
The scene is bordered with a thin band of white and gold brocade lapped by a wide band of sand colored brocade embellished with flowering gold tendrils,
Some tear in places. Minor damages to one panel, but overall in very good condition. Condition consistent with age and use less
