An Extremely Impressive Late 18th Century Rectangular Giltwood And Gesso Pier Mirror, Of Neoclassical Design, Having Exceptionally Carved Urn Surmounted Above Elegant Carved Decoration. Enclosing Original Rectangular Mirror Plate, Flanked By Fluted Half Turned Columns Headed with Carved Decoration.
This extremely attractive late 18th century gilt wall mirror has real elegance and class to its design. Wherever it ends up placed there is absolutely no doubt that it will add sophistication to the room as well as having the ability to fill a good size space without being overly dominant.
Overall it remains in good condition with just the expected old marks, scuffs, scrapes and repairs commensurate with an item of this age. Certainly there is nothing visually distracting, or disturbing in that respect.
It is also nice to note that it is 18th century in date, not early 19th century like many available for sale. Thats why there is slightly more sophistication to the carved decoration, particularly the fabulous urn on top. We believe that the mirror plate is probably original and typically of a mirror this age there is some old silvering and pitting in places, however there areas are relatively small and certainly do not significantly distract from the piece visually in any way whatsoever.
The term “Pier” mirror is generally used to describe an antique mirror whose proportions are relatively tall and narrow. As the name suggests this is because they were originally made to hang on the brick piers between the windows of a room.
As with all items which we offer for sale this antique mirror has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our highly skilled, trained traditional antique furniture restorers to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within its new home.
