LOUIS VANDAMME & EZAN
A beautiful pair of large French art deco wall sconces in opalescent glass and solid brass … more LOUIS VANDAMME & EZAN
A beautiful pair of large French art deco wall sconces in opalescent glass and solid brass made around 1935. This model shade is never signed and was produced by EJG- Ezan (Etablissements Jean Gauthier). With beautiful tones of milky blue or warm amber depending whether light falls on or shines through them.
The fixtures were produced by the Paris France based lighting manufacturer Louis Vandamme. Similar wall lights made out of demi bowls are represented in the 1932 Vandamme catalog. The catalog is of course no part of this sale. We can see the VL foundry marks of Vandamme on the inside of the brass mounts.
The wall lights are 40 cm (15,75 inches) wide 19,7 cm (7,75") deep and 9,7 cm (3,8") high. The pair of sconces is in good condition. Two small chips that will hardly notice with the sconces in place (see pictures). I cleaned the brass mounts and rewired the fixtures with American candelabra base sockets. For European countries I will place E14 ones.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the street name of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
