This exquisite late art deco low coffee table is attributed to Maison Jansen of Paris. The coffee table is made of ebonized wood with an inset glass top decorated with gold and silver leaf. The surface design resembles a mirror in a gold frame. Both the shape of the table and the gilt design on top are in the chinoiserie style, which refers to a Western style of decorative art inspired by Asian art and cultures. Despite the name reference, the style influences were not just Chinese, but from a wider region often referred to as the Far East during the 18th century. This specific piece utilizes an inward curve of the legs and the low height of the table, both prominent design elements from the Ming dynasty in China. The gilt design is reminiscent of motifs and borders found on traditional Eastern clothing and designed objects.
Maison Jansen was a Paris-based interior decoration office founded in 1880 by Dutch-born Jean-Henri Jansen. From its beginnings, Maison Jansen combined traditional furnishings with influences of new trends including the Anglo-Japanese style, the Arts and Crafts movement, and the Turkish style. The firm paid great attention to historical research, which enabled the creation of a piece with nods to traditional eastern design like this. This beautifully designed table was made with expert-level craftsmanship and care, making it an excellent addition to any space.
