Introduced by renowned pottery artist Bernard Leach to Tatsuzo Shimaoka (awarded the status of 'Living National Treasure' by the Japanese Government and a student of Shōji Hamada), Gerd Knäpper, born in 1943 in Wuppertal, Germany, was introduced to the Tsukamoto Pottery in Japan where he undertook training of Mashiko-yaki. He then established his own kiln in Ibaraki, Japan- the first foreigner owned kiln - at the age of 26.
Awarded first prize in the prestigious ceramic art competition by the
Japanese Cultural Ministry in 1971. His ceramic bowl (shown in the last image) took top
honors out of a total of 500 anonymously submitted pieces. Knäpper
was the first European to win this purely Japanese award, which
accelerated his rise to fame.
In the following decades, Knäpper’s works were featured in countless exhibitions of his ceramic art in museums and galleries worldwide. Gerd Knäpper received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1991 and opened the Gerd Knäpper Gallery in 2007. He passed away in 2012, at which time he was featured in Alistair Seton’s book, Collecting Japanese Antiques.
