NEW COLLECTION! This is a stunning Original Mixed Media Painting on Paper by Listed New York Artist, Josef Presser (1907-1967). Presser's works have been exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His work is in many museum collections, both here and abroad, including the Uffizi, Florence, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Philadelphia.
This depiction of a man and a sad clown is a very fine example of his work. The deep colors and nice textural elements show off Presser's talent for working across mediums. This work was originally purchased and framed in the 1950s and we have not examined it outside the frame. It appears to be a mix of gouache, charcoal, and oil on paper. It has been matted and framed under glass. Signed in the upper right. A must-have for the Presser collector.
Provenance and Certification: Only one known owner who purchased the painting around 1950. Certificate of Authenticity with provenance included.
Condition: Good overall condition. Some areas of chipping visible upon close inspection. Some crazing. Wave to the paper from heavy paint. Vintage frame and mat have wear and age as expected, but no damage
Measurements: Sight Size of painting is approx 19.5"x15.5" and it is approx 31"x27" framed.
About the Artist: Josef Presser was born in Lublin, Poland. He studied at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, in Europe, and with Bryant Baker, Henry Hunt Clark, Philip Hale, and William James. He was a member of the Philadelphia Watercolor Club and the New Haven Paint and Clay Club and exhibited at the Carnegie Institute, Pittsburgh, The Art Institute of Chicago, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His work is in many museum collections, both here and abroad, including the Uffizi, Florence, The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Philadelphia Art Alliance, Philadelphia.
