Muller Fréres Lamp, Art Nouveau, 1920 – Luneville, France
Splendid Art Nouveau hanging lamp made in France at the beginning of the 20th century, signed Muller Fréres. Elegant and delicate, it is configured with a light wrought iron structure enriched with extraordinary glass lampshades. The center of it is a large glass ceiling from which the three arms or lights emerge. This glass is opaque and marbled, with color gradation, from white to pink. In the tulips, molded edges as if it were a flower. The iron structure, for its part, also presents plant elements such as fleshy grape leaves. Art Nouveau has nature as its source of inspiration, and from it it adopts sinuous and organic forms, which provide that note of warmth that is so important in a home. These whip lines, which are reminiscent of the arms, will be used infinitely in this wonderful style.
Crafted from high-quality materials, this exquisite chandelier is a testament to the art and craftsmanship of the early 20th century.
Muller Frères (Co.)
The Müller brothers were a family of renowned glass artisans originating from the Moselle region of France. In total there were ten siblings, nine boys and one girl, all of them involved in glass work. Initially, several of them worked in glass factories in Saint-Louis, but during the Franco-Prussian War (1870-71), the family was evacuated to Lunéville. Around 1885, two of the brothers, Désiré and Eugène, entered the workshop of Émile Gallé, master of Art Nouveau glass, where they worked in the engraving and cutting departments. They were joined by other brothers such as Henri, Pierre and Victor.
In 1895, Henri Müller decided to become independent and founded his own glass workshop in Lunéville. Little by little, the other brothers joined this initiative, establishing the company Muller Frères, which soon specialized in the production of glass pieces in the Art Nouveau style, applying the knowledge acquired in Gallé's workshop. His work was highly appreciated, standing out for its technical and artistic quality.
In 1910, the company began manufacturing lamps in collaboration with Chapelle, reaching its peak and employing up to 300 workers. Production focused on vases, lampshades and candelabras, which often included layered and colored glass, characteristic of the Art Nouveau style. After the First World War, the Art Deco style began to gain popularity, which influenced the Müller creations.
However, the company suffered the impact of the Great Depression and, in 1933, production ceased. Three years later, the factory closed permanently, ending the Müller brothers' successful career in creating artistic glass.
