This 5x11 antique Bessarabian Kilim is a rich and exciting new collectible from Rug & Kilim’s collection—hand woven in wool and originating from the titular region of Russia circa 1920-1930.
On the Design
Designers and admirers of the craft alike will particularly appreciate its size—one of the best and most versatile one can find in antique rugs of its period that lends to so many spaces today. This grand work seems to exemplify those of its lineage while subtly innovating the style to a keen eye. Rich chocolate brown underscores floral patterns and pictorials in a unique, vibrant design like few seen in this provenance. A border of vine scroll florals encloses a field with three pictorial medallions—flowers growing from potted plants in polychrome, though the keen eye will note an emphasis of chartreuse and magenta tones. Admirers of the craft will appreciate this as a particularly expressive work among Bessarabian flatweaves, with very finely woven drawings of exceptional quality.
