Pile: Low pile with genuine age-related patina and wear. As far as actual repairs go, there really isn’t much repair or restoration done on this piece like typical antique rugs; however, this piece has a phenomenon that is only done on particular pieces that were woven and then gifted, acquired by, or sent to the Mosques; when this happens there are weavers and repair people that are hired or asked to make the rug "Halal" or Lawful, Pure or Empty of anything that may not be part of the Vision of God; which in this case could be the depiction of hunting, portraits of animals, etc - so, these weavers and repair people have removed particular knots of in areas of this piece and rewove a matching wool color that basically omits anything that could be seen as Un-Godly or impure or tainted in the breath of keeping it “Halal”-like. In this piece you will still see Bunny Rabbits, Lovely Paradise Birds, a Dragon or Serpents grip against a Feline, a Lion or Leopard Hunting a Cow, Horse or Bull (which is a super old Persian motif), a Portrait of a Cat or Lion, and even Ducks!! I can't begin to explain how interesting this piece is to me, and then adding the story of how this piece was asked to be given, gifted, or purchased for and in the Mosque and therefore having to edit the piece by hand is something that will forever fascinate me. These weavers of faith have created something special, and then have taken their Art and tailored it to the honor the important asks and beliefs of the setting that the piece was intended for after it was woven, that change in hands and willingness to celebrate this Piece while still staying true to their faith is magical and learning about this has been really interesting as this art gets more expansive as we dive deeper into it. This piece has some slight color transfer in some really minor areas, nothing crazy at all that can be touched up if you want, otherwise enjoy this Art just the way it is and enjoy a true One of One piece of History, Culture, and Art. Unmatched quality in the weaving as each knot is so small and unbelievably fine allowing for the subjects and animals in the piece be so crisp and clear for the viewer. Not just anyone can weave a carpet that is this detailed, so the weavers themselves are true artisans, and this coupled with the story of how it has passed through the hands of repair people to do the honorable job of buttoning it up for a Holy Place of Worship just adds an eternity of Beauty and Story to an already Astonishing True Antique Persian Carpet
About: A 19th Century Piece woven in the Greatest Rug Weaving Country the World has ever known - Persia. Antique Kerman Lavars are known for their fineness in weave, particular reds mainly from Cochineal insects, and their sensational use of the indigo plant to present us with such colors like pale blue, sky blue, a nice bodied denim blue, and of course almost an inky blue-black that anchors the rug and shadows the perfect motifs to give an almost 3-D effect. In this piece the use of lighter dyes are also calculated to give the rug an expandedness and an all-encompassing spaciousness to honor and celebrate the unique 4 Corner Spandrels that depict a "Hunt" between a Leopard or Lion Feline and a Cow or Prey. The Moat or field of the rug is decorated with maybe the most iconic motif in the world, the Sickle Leaf, as famously known as the main motif in the Most Expensive Rug Ever Sold ($32M). This is a very Kerman motif and it is a delight to see it throughout this piece surrounding all sorts of Song-looking Birds and even what appears to be Ducks inside arabesque vinery that adds a lightness and delicacy to the piece as it surrounds the Center Medallion where you will find the Dragon or Serpent's Grip around its prey as another Hunt. To the left and right of the medallion are more birds, and woven above and below the medallion inside the finials you'll note the face of a Feline Cat, most likely a Lion, and even bunny rabbits as the finials shoot up almost touching the guard border. And that leads us to this magnificent border - a border with tons of rows and rows of dainty floral chains suspended throughout the minor borders flanking the main border filled with larger-scaled leafs and Palmette Flower heads. Thorough this piece you will note bands of faint pale blue horizontal abrash that jet through sometimes the entirety of the piece, and sometimes just small sections - this is absolute poetry as they define distinct birthmarks off this particular carpet. For those that love very finely woven pieces, Important story to the rugs, God's Vision and Creation of Animals, Birds, and The Circle of Life Suggestions throughout, all in combination with whimsical and spontaneous 19th Century Weavings from some of the most Impressive and Soulful weavers - this is indeed an Art-Carpet for you. Truly One of One. We will never come across something so Splendid again, enjoy.
