Cherrier & Besnus - Ezan
A beautiful pair of small French art deco wall sconces in clear frosted pressed glass … more Cherrier & Besnus - Ezan
A beautiful pair of small French art deco wall sconces in clear frosted pressed glass and solid brass made around 1930-1935. This model shade is never signed and was produced by EJG- Ezan (Etablissements Jean Gauthier). The brass mounts are stamped with the foundry mark RM.
The sconces were made by the Paris France based company in bronze lighting fixtures Cherrier et Besnus. In 1926 monsieur E.Cherrier and monsieur Besnus took over the company of Roger Massin at 36 rue Amelot street. Massin produced bronze lighting in a neo-classical and art nouveau style. Cherrier et Besnus continued the production of these Massin products as well as introduced new designs in art deco style. The art deco lamps of Cherrier & Besnus are well made items of excellent quality. The bronze parts of their fixtures are often stamped with the foundry initials RM (for Roger Massin).
The wall lights are 10 inches (25,5 cm) wide 5,6" (14,2 cm) deep and 3,6"(9,5 cm) high. The pair is in very good condition. I cleaned the brass mounts and rewired the fixtures with American candelabra base sockets. For European countries I will place E14 ones.

Jean Gauthier had his first workshop at 12-14 rue Jean Robert in Paris and later expended with factories in the town of Ezanville. In the early days just after the first world war Gauthier made cameo shades that were sometimes signed Gauthier. The plants in Ezanville were opened for the production of art deco glassware in molded-pressed glass. Many art deco models are unsigned. Some are signed EJG for Etablissements Jean Gauthier. Others are signed J.Robert pseudonym for J.Gauthier based on the streetname of the first workshop. In the 30s Gauthier started a line of shades done in opalescent semi-crystal, mainly cups. Some models are unsigned. Others are signed EZAN France, signature for Gauthier based on the city of the second plant.
