The baskets of this type are commonly called a Wedding Basket and in China they are referred to as betrothal baskets as they are traditionally used during the betrothal or engagement. The family of the groom fills the basket with dowry gifts for the bride's family. The more tiers in a basket the wealthier the family. This basket measures about 18" tall and 13" wide. Good antique condition with normal signs of wear from age and use. This basket is from the late Qing period, circa 1890 - 1910.
