This fabulous Satsuma-like beauty is looking for a new place to hang out, your home perhaps? A unique, one-of-a-kind decorative accent or plant stand, in or out of doors, this lovely will work well in any modern home. If placing outdoors, she will continue to look as great as she does today if kept out of the elements on a covered patio or screened in porch. The amazing color rich palette of the moriage-like design consists of rich jewel-tone hues set on a dusky black background with golden accents throughout. On both sides, as well as the top, you will see a royal garden scene depicting what appears to be “lords of the manor” surrounded by a troupe of geishas. This cutie measures 18½” x 7” x 15” x W/D/H; weight 15 lbs.; handcrafted from moulded earthenware and moriage-like designs which are applied using slip (a clay product) on top of the pottery and then fired. In excellent condition; glazed finish is nicely preserved, minimal wear. Makers kiln mark is on the underside of the belly, which when translated means “Zhongguo Zhi Zao - China Made”. As mentioned above this is a Satsuma-like piece. Genuine Satsuma is native to Japan. Most people are familiar with late Satsuma or nishikide, a distinctive Japanese pottery from the Meiji period, 1868 to 1912. One of the more distinctive features of this Satsuma is the crackled glaze and the overall painted decoration. That element is easily palpable and often done in a technique known as moriage, a Japanese word that translates as “heap up”. It is a trailed-slip decoration originally used to indicate the gilt beading seen on Japanese pottery. Moriage dates back to the 17th century in Japan. The designs are applied using slip (a clay product) on top of the pottery and then fired. So please note, this is a beautifully done Chinese reproduction of Satsuma which hails from the early 1970s to early 1980s. A real "head-turner"!
