Markings (E A M 40 within an oval) indicate it was made by Elgin American Manufacturing, a fine crafts house focused on watchmaking and metalworking out of Illinois. Constructed of a cast iron base and solid brass tray and bowl, it exudes quality craftsmanship. Brass markings are '86 73,' which I believe was a EAM quality demarcation.

We discovered this beautiful scale in the Washington wine country, near Walla Walla. Manufactured in the late 1800s/early 1900s, it was likely used in a dry goods shop to weigh flour, produce, and other household items. This stunning crafted scale is a wonderful gift for the hard to shop for person who appreciates quality craftsmanship and a slice of American history.
