Gustavo Novoa's 'His' painting is a compendium of Primitive and Surrealism styles. This piece is unique in its bold color schema and drips with surrealistic imagery.
Gustavo offers to his viewer, arguably the most alpha male of the Jungle, the all-powerful lion, in quiet repose. Lying peacefully, perhaps not even in wait, the observer doesn't receive the idea this lion waits to pounce. Instead, one feels a masterclass of relaxation. Suggesting the lion, an enduring symbol of power and autocratic rule, also possesses a soft(er) more feminine aspect.
Set against a background of nearly every (im)possible shade of red, this color choice is rich in symbolism and meaning, this lion rests, in sweet repose.
The choice of double matte; an off-white to encapsulate the subject, then in rich red, to further draw the eye outward and secondly, to provide depth of range, is classic Gustavo Novoa.
As with Gustavo Novoa's 'Zebra Talk' painting, 'His' was likely painted sometime between the 1960s and 1970s. This is likely because, as astute followers of Gustavo Novoa agree, he had, by the 1980s, moved on from the inspirations of the Jungle, towards his next fascination, the American southwest, its Pueblos, and what became known as his Adobe period.
Additional Seller Notes
This piece was acquired in 1996, as a pairing with a second Gustavo Novoa piece, titled "Zebra Talk", also offered for sale here on the Chairish platform. Both paintings were accompanied by a single 6-page, hand-crafted 'original Wally Findley Gallery-produced artist biography' printed on museum-quality paper, bound in a thick red fiber.
This 6-page accompaniment includes, on its last two pages, a Certificate of Guarantee for both 'Zebra Talk' (page 5) and 'His' (page 6), dating to 1991, that each piece is an original Gustavo Novoa work of art.
Should the Chairish buyer purchase both 'His' and 'Zebra Talk', they will receive the original 6-page accompaniment.
Otherwise each individual buyer will receive the original Certificate of Guarantee, dating to 1991, confirming that the individually-purchased piece is an original Gustavo Novoa work of art. less
