It features a bouquet of orange California poppies and pink peonies filled out with pale blue wild flowers and an array of greenery.
The bouquet is seated in a classic Italian can of whole peeled tomatoes. In my teenage years, once my father and I connected, I would ask him to make me a really classic pasta napoletana for me on my birthday. His second wife was Sicilian, and he had learned to make the dish to impress her mum. It remains my go-to test of the quality of any Italian restaurant, but it is also my favorite recipe to make and eat with my own family.
My daughter's favorite flowers are California poppies, so bringing these into the still life connects the generations in a manner that appealed to my decidedly sentimental heart.
