David Hockney is widely regarded as one of the world's foremost painters. Since his student days at the Royal College of Art in London during the early 1960s, he has attracted a huge public following. His many changes of style and frequent ventures into new fields have been extensively chronicled, and his paintings are now more highly valued than those of any contemporary British artist.

Throughout his career, Hockney's work has been the subject of numerous one-man exhibitions all over the world. These shows are advertised by posters—many of them supervised by Hockney or actually produced by him—that represent a graphic summary of his work. Hockney has traveled widely, taking inspiration from the places he has visited, and the posters follow his travels and exhibitions. His work has gone through a wide range of styles, and his posters chart and reflect these changes.

Posters by David Hockney have been avidly collected and, as a result, many of them are now rare or unobtainable. Only one definitive private collection exists, containing more than 120 examples of his posters. Hockney Posters is the illustrated catalogue of a comprehensive exhibition derived from this collection, shown in Britain, Japan, and the United States to mark David Hockney's fiftieth birthday.

Hockney Posters contains a complete color catalogue raisonné of the posters and superb large-format reproductions of some of the finest examples of David Hockney's work. The accompanying essay is by Eric Shanes.

DAVID HOCKNEY was born in England on July 9, 1937, and received a traditional training at the Bradford School of Art. In 1959 he enrolled as a postgraduate student at the Royal College of Art, and left in 1962 with the gold medal for his year and a national reputation. In 1967 Hockney won first prize in the John Moores Exhibition, and three years later he was honored with the first of several major exhibitions that have established his reputation internationally.

Hockney has traveled all over the world and lives in the United States, principally in California. He has worked in many different areas, including painting, drawing, posters, photography, and stage set designs.
