Wonderful early 19th Century King George V Tea Caddy. Satinwood caddy with black ebony banding around the lid (1/2" from edge) with a decorated shield at the front for the key and lock. Interior comprises of two lidded storage areas, with a center silver bowl and spoon. Caddy is complete with key.
Dated 1835 London. No makers mark. The silver spoon reflects the hallmarks of London, with the uncrowned Lion and appropriate marks of year and maker. Below the silver bowl, is traditional green beize (green felt). The tea caddy sits on four small balls at the edge of each corner.
Tea, when introduced from Asia to Europe, was very expensive, hence it was kept under lock and key, the purpose of the two separate containers held within the caddy, different teas were mixed by the Butler. These beautiful caddies were highly prized possessions in the home, often highly decorated and kept in the drawing room in pride of place.
