Thorkild Olsen 'Skaldyr' Vase in Craquelé and Gold for Royal Copenhagen, Denmark, early to mid 20th century. This is a beautiful and rare Danish ceramic studio vase, designed by Thorkild Olsen in the 1930s - 1940s. This fairly large vase shows a wonderful and elegant design with floral and sea inspired motifs in gold and craquelé. It is both classical and modernist in appearance. The hand painted decoration is wonderfully done and the craquelé glaze makes for a fantastic basis. Thorkild Osvald Olsen (1890 - 1973) was a Danish painter and ceramist who worked with both earthenware and porcelain. Olsen became a key figure in the establishment of Royal Copenhagen’s worldwide reputation. In his early works, e.g. a series of works in craquelure porcelain from the 1920s, the decoration in iron red and gold is naturalistic, most often with botanical motifs. Thorkild Olsen was a renowned and celebrated designer and received many awards, most notably at the World Exhibition in Paris 1925. He is represented in the Royal Copenhagen Museum, the Kunstindustrimuseet, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris and the Museo Internazionale delle Ceramiche in Faenza. The vase in our collection comes in a wonderful condition without any faults. It is signed at the base. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
