The work is by the Italian painter Pasquale Ottino (also Ottini) known as Pasqualotto (Verona, 26 September 1578 - Verona 30 July 1630). Trained, together with Alessandro Turchi, in the Veronese workshop of Felice Brusasorci, after an initial phase still linked to the ways of late Venetian mannerism Pasquale Ottino, like his "associates" Marcantonio Bassetti and Alessandro Turchi, updated his pictorial language in a naturalistic key . This evolution includes an original, but evident, Caravaggio fascination, linked to a highly probable, although undocumented, stay in Rome. The typically Veronese specialization in painting on touchstone support led Ottino to experiment and exasperate the chiaroscuro and luministic contrast effects, with a predilection for the nocturnal setting of which we have a great example in this remarkable Deposition of Christ in the tomb, of engaging tragedy despite its elegantly balanced composition. Here we can identify clear terms of comparison with other nocturnal works by Ottino, such as the Raising of Lazarus in the Borghese Gallery in Rome or the Deposition of Christ in the Castelvecchio Museum in Verona.
