An extraordinary piece of history, this Delft blue earthenware plate, crafted by the prestigious De Porceleyne Fles, also known as Royal Delft for Christmas or "Kerstmis" 1922, bears the powerful inscription “Peace on Earth” (Vrede op Aarde). The hand-painted holly leaves and central starburst design, symbolizing hope and renewal, reflect the sentiment of a world emerging from the shadows of World War I, making this plate a poignant reminder of the collective wish for peace during the holiday season.
Established in 1653, Royal Delft is the last remaining active factory from the original Delftware producers, continuing the tradition of hand-crafted blue-and-white ceramics that originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century. Known for its intricate craftsmanship and meticulous attention to detail, Royal Delft is celebrated worldwide for producing some of the finest Delftware, with each piece being a testament to centuries of ceramic expertise. This particular plate, created at a time when the world was recovering from war, holds both artistic and historical significance.
The plate’s inscription, coupled with its holiday motif, highlights the importance of unity and peace in the post-war world. The rich, vibrant cobalt blue is characteristic of traditional Delftware, while the holly leaf motif adds a festive touch, making this a stunning decorative piece for the Christmas season or a collectible item for those with an interest in historic European ceramics.
