This really is a Great Looking Authentic Antique American Primitive Stoneware Spirits Jug. It is Not Marked as Such but … more This really is a Great Looking Authentic Antique American Primitive Stoneware Spirits Jug. It is Not Marked as Such but it is an Approx 1 Gallon Size. It is Embossed - Signed by the Documented Maker "S. RISLEY NORWICH" - SIDNEY RISLEY in NORWICH CONNECTICUT. Records Indicate that the Company was in Business From Approx 1814 to 1875. It is Rendered in a Classic "Beehive" Form and it has a Unusual Brown Color Salt Glaze Exterior with a Rusty Color at the Spout. The Front of the Jug has a Very Nice Hand Decorated Navy Blue Design that Also Appears to be Incised Under the Glaze. Back in the Day These Types of Stoneware Items were a Necessity in Most of Americas Farms and Household's and They were Made - Intended For Everyday Utilitarian Use. These Types of Jugs were Commonly Used to Store Liquids such as Ciders, Vinegar, Ales, Liquors & Spirits, Spring Water Etc. It is in Very Nice Overall Original Condition and it Displays Beautifully. It is Strong and Sound. Minor Imperfections Noted - There is a Very Tight 3 line Crack at the Right Side Lower Base Area ( See Last 2 Photographs ). There is also a Few Small Surface Indentations that are Under the Glaze Confirming that they Would have Occurred in the Making - Kiln Firing Process. Stoneware Pieces Like This were Fired in Very Large Kilns with Many Other Pieces at the Same Time and These Types of Kiln Flaws are Quite Common.
It Measures Overall Approx. 10 1/4 Tall x 8 Inches Long - Wide.
