Vase mod. Y15 from the Yantra series in black enameled ceramic, designed by Ettore Sottsass and produced by Poltronova in the 1970s.
Autor's signature and model are visible underneath the base.
The Yantra series was originally composed of 32 different shaped vases realized with casting molds and thought of as a limited series of 100 pieces each.
with the Yantra series, Sottsass wants to continue a reflection he had started with the Tantra series, about the oriental and more spiritual approach to life.
Through ceramics, Sottsass wants to replicate archetypical shapes, capable of catalys our perception; these vases become significant objects that bring us back to the primordial order of life.
As Ajit Mookerjee explains in his book, titled Tantra Art: ''Yantra is essentially a geometrical composition: but in true nature, one has to go beyond the notion of geometry into those of dynamics. A Yantra then represents a particular force whose power or energy increases in proportion to the abstraction and precision of the diagram. Through such Yantra or power diagrams, creation and control of ideas and physical forces are supposed to be possible.''
Through these ceramics, Sottsass makes a powerful reflection about design (and objects) as figurative elements that can actively act on the human mind and body to bring in a state of balance and serenity, free from social and political constructions.
