This English floor clock, signed “Rolt. Bowers Chesters”, dating from the early 19th century, is a true masterpiece of cabinetmaking and watchmaking.
Made from mahogany, it has a weight mechanism and a brass pendulum.
Its dial, protected by a glass door, is graduated with hours in Roman numerals and minutes in Arabic numerals.
A small offset dial indicates the seconds and a date complication is present.
The whole is bordered by a chiseled brass background decorated with scrolls.
This dial is topped with an animated element representing a boat, “Le Formidable”, of the famous Admiral George Rodney.
This ship of the English fleet, equipped with 98 cannons, played a crucial role during the Battle of Saintes in Guadeloupe.
The item is accompanied by the quote “Watch and pray, Time Hastes Away”.
The pediment, delicately decorated with painted motifs of foliage and sculptures of flowers in gilded bronze, is supported by two uprights with bronze rings.
The body of the clock, decorated with discreet marquetry in light wood and opening through a cut-out door with lock and brass entrance, rests on a square-section pedestal.
This unique piece combines elegance and history, making it a true treasure for antique lovers.
