This handsome quartersawn oak compactum wardrobe was originally owned by an uncle of a friend of ours, which places its manufacture to sometime in the early 20th-century. Nicely sized without taking up an entire room, the whole structure is raised on two front C-scroll feet with casters and two rear bracket feet, also on casters which allows for effortless movement and placement in a room. This handsome piece measures as follows:
Overall: 59¼” x 42½” x 20” H/W/D (height includes 1¼” rail at the top back)
Interior right side: 50” x 20” x 17¼” H/W/D
Interior left side open cubby upper top: 8” x 20” x 16” H/W/D; there is a pull-out mirror tucked above the cubby which measures 11” x 11”H/W that is attached with the string seen in the photo 2 background
Interior left side: you’ll find a bank of 6-dovetailed drawers; 4 drawers measure 5¼” x 18½” x 14” H/W/D apiece while the other 2 measure 3¾” x 18½” x 13¾” H/W/D apiece
Weight: approximately 200 lbs.
Handcrafted from quartersawn oak, the bank of drawers was added at a later date and are made of another type of hardwood. On the interior right, there is a metal pull-out hanging rail, hanging rack on the interior right door and a metal wire shoe rack on the lower left side. The bank of drawers on wooden rails on the left side roll out smoothly; drawer number two from the top scoots back a little further than all the others. Also on the left side, above the open cubby, there is a slot with rails where an original 11” x 11” wooden framed mirror rests (not show in photos) and is held in place by a string (see photo 2). Brass hardware and porcelain door pulls are original. In excellent condition with age-appropriate wear. Structural integrity is excellent. Doors close and fit snuggly, no gaps or wiggle; casters roll smoothly. There is one slightly dark spot underneath the waxed stain finish (it’s in wood grain - see photo 8) which does not affect its utility or beauty. There is no makers mark to be found.
Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the compactum wardrobe was handcrafted with care and attention to detail; often an integral part of bedroom furniture ensembles. It was used to store clothing, linens and other personal belongings. Their popularity surged during the Victorian and Edwardian eras and their timeless appeal continues to captivate antique enthusiasts and collectors today. This versatile piece will easily complement any modern home and provide additional storage for not only clothing but linens, blankets and perhaps fabric in a sewing room. Whether you are an antique aficionado or simply appreciate the allure of vintage pieces, an antique compactum wardrobe can be a captivating addition to your home, adding a touch of history that will be cherished for generations to come.
