* Jan van de Velde grew up in Rotterdam and learned engraving from Jakob Matham in Haarlem. from 1614 he belonged to the Haarlem Guild of St. Luke. Over the next three years he created over a hundred engravings. This made him one of the most productive Haarlem artists of his time.
Jan van de Velde preferred landscapes as motifs, but also created more than 50 portraits, as well as genre scenes, illustrations for books and paintings. He was influenced, among others, by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn. In addition to his own motifs, he later also processed templates from other artists into engravings.
Van de Velde's works are in numerous museums in Europe and the USA.
