Monumental framed standing portrait of George Washington (1752-1799) in colorful wood needlepoint after Gilbert Stuart's "Lansdowne". The sight measures 35.5 inches across and 51.75 inches high. The needlepoint is mounted in an elaborately carved gilt wood frame with gold leaf borders on the inside. The frame is 4.5 inches thick and very heavy with a glass cover. The portrait features rich, vibrant colors with silver and gold metallic accents with intricate details. Needlepoint portraits such as Lansdowne were very popular in the Victorian Era. This artwork is very well preserved with minimal fading and vibrant colors. The work is beautifully framed. From an estate in San Francisco, CA. The Lansdowne portrait was named because it was a gift to the Marquis of Lansdowne who was an English supporter to the American cause.
